Study in USA for Sri Lankan Students: The 2027 Guide (Real Costs in LKR, Visa & Scholarships)

Thinking about going to the USA after your A/Ls or your degree? You are not alone. In 2023–24, about 3,424 Sri Lankans went to study in the United States, and that number keeps growing every year.

But most guides only tell you that "the USA has great universities." This one is different. We focus on the problems Sri Lankan students actually face. Your A/L results come out after US deadlines. Your 3-year degree may not be accepted for a master's. Your bank card gets blocked when you try to pay a US application fee. And you need to show millions of rupees at the US Embassy in Colombo.

What's New in 2026 for Sri Lankan Students Going to the USA

US student visa rules changed a lot in 2025 and 2026. Here is what matters to you, in plain words.

1. Sri Lanka is NOT on the US travel ban or visa bond lists

From 1 January 2026, the US fully or partly stopped issuing visas to people from 39 countries. Sri Lanka is not one of them. Sri Lanka is also not on the list of countries that must pay a visa bond of up to USD 15,000. Sri Lankan students can apply for F1 visas as normal.

2. Your social media must be public

Everyone applying for a student visa (F, M or J) is asked to set their social media accounts to "public." You must also list every username you have used in the last five years on your DS-160 form, including old and inactive accounts. Before you apply, clean up your Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X accounts. Remove anything that could be misunderstood. Do not delete accounts, and do not leave any out of the form.

3. The "4-year limit" rule is on hold for now

In July 2026, the US government published a rule to end "duration of status." Under that rule, students would get a fixed stay of their program length or 4 years, whichever is shorter. Undergraduates would also not be allowed to change their major in the first year. However, a federal court in Massachusetts postponed the rule on 14 September 2026, the day before it was due to start. The government has appealed, so for now the old system continues. What this means for you: pick your major carefully from day one, because the rule could still come back.

4. Visa fees: plan for a possible extra USD 250

The visa application (MRV) fee is USD 185 and the SEVIS fee for F1 students is USD 350. A new USD 250 "visa integrity fee" became law in 2025, but embassies have collected it unevenly. Keep USD 250 aside in your budget just in case. Check the US Embassy page before your interview.

Study in USA After A/L: Requirements for Sri Lankan Students

The good news is that US universities accept Sri Lankan A/Ls for a bachelor's degree. You usually do not need a foundation year, unlike in the UK and Australia. US bachelor's degrees are four years long, so 13 years of school plus A/L is enough for most universities.

Local A/L vs Edexcel/Cambridge A-Levels

Both are accepted. US admission officers often know Cambridge and Edexcel grades better. If you did local A/Ls, help them understand your results. Ask your school to add a short note explaining the grading system (A, B, C, S) and what your Z-score means. A strong Z-score that nobody understands is wasted.

"My A/L results come out after the US deadline." What now?

This is one of the most common worries. US deadlines fall between November and January, often before your A/L results are released. You do not have to wait a year. Apply using:

  • Your O/L results
  • Your Grade 10–12 term test results (school reports)
  • Predicted A/L grades, written by your teachers

Most universities will give you an offer that depends on your final results. Send the official results as soon as they are released.

Your school has no "college counsellor." That's okay.

US applications ask for a "counselor recommendation." Most Sri Lankan schools don't have one, and that is fine. Your principal, deputy principal or class teacher can write it. What matters is that the letter is specific: your rank in class, your leadership roles, your character. A general "good student" letter does not help much.

Took a gap year after A/L? Explain it.

Many Sri Lankan students wait a year or more for state university entry, or for results to come out. US universities don't mind a gap year. What they don't like is a blank gap. Show what you did: courses, a job, family business work, volunteering or self-study. Write about it in your essay.

English tests: IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo?

Most US universities accept all three. Typical minimums are IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 or Duolingo 105–120. Top universities ask for more. Duolingo is cheaper and you can take it at home, which makes it popular in Sri Lanka. Check that each of your universities accepts it before you book. See our IELTS and Duolingo coaching.

Do I need the SAT?

Many US universities are "test-optional," but some top universities have made the SAT required again. A good SAT score (1350+) can also unlock merit scholarships, even at test-optional universities. If money matters, the SAT is usually worth taking. Read our SAT preparation guide.

Masters in USA for Sri Lankan Students: The 3-Year Degree Problem

This is the biggest hidden trap for graduates, and almost no one talks about it.

The problem: A US master's degree expects 16 years of education, which means 12 years of school plus a 4-year bachelor's. Many Sri Lankan degrees are only 3 years long, such as a General BA, BSc or BCom. Some US universities say clearly that a 3-year degree from Sri Lanka is not the same as a US bachelor's degree, and they will reject you even if your grades are excellent.

What you can do:

  • 4-year Special or Honours degree? You are usually fine.
  • 3-year degree? Look for universities that accept 3-year degrees. Some do, especially for business and computer science programs.
  • Look for bridge programs, where you study one extra year in the US before the master's.
  • Complete a 1-year postgraduate diploma or a local master's first. Together with your 3-year degree, that often counts as 4 years.
  • Check each university's international admissions page for "Sri Lanka" before you pay any application fee.

Credential evaluation (WES, ECE and others)

Some universities ask for a course-by-course evaluation of your transcripts from an approved agency. It converts your Sri Lankan marks into a US GPA. Order it early. Getting university-sealed transcripts from Sri Lankan universities can take weeks.

GRE and GMAT

Many master's programs no longer require the GRE. Still, for STEM programs a good GRE score can help you get admission and funding, especially if your GPA is average. MBA and business programs may ask for the GMAT or GRE. See our full guide to masters in USA and how to write an SOP that works.

Cost of Studying in USA for Sri Lankan Students (in LKR)

Here are real numbers in rupees. We used about LKR 310 = USD 1 (the early-2026 rate). Check the current rate before you plan.

Expense (per year)USDApprox. LKR
Community college tuition$8,000 – $15,000LKR 2.5M – 4.7M
Public (state) university tuition$25,000 – $45,000LKR 7.8M – 14M
Private university tuition$40,000 – $65,000LKR 12.4M – 20.2M
Living costs (small town → big city)$12,000 – $22,000LKR 3.7M – 6.8M
Health insurance (usually compulsory)$1,500 – $3,500LKR 0.5M – 1.1M
Total per year (typical range)$30,000 – $88,000LKR 9.3M – 27.3M

One-time costs Sri Lankan families often forget

  • Application fees: USD 50–100 per university. With 8 universities, that's about LKR 120,000–250,000.
  • Test fees: IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo, plus SAT or GRE.
  • SEVIS fee: USD 350. Visa fee: USD 185. Possible integrity fee: USD 250.
  • Flight from Colombo: USD 900–1,500 one way. There are no direct flights, so you will always have a connection.
  • Setting up: housing deposit, bedding, winter clothes and a laptop. Allow USD 1,500–2,500.
  • Enrolment deposit to confirm your seat. Some universities ask for USD 200–1,000.

Plan for the rupee to move

Many families learned this the hard way during the 2022 crisis. Your tuition is fixed in dollars, but your savings and loans are in rupees. If the rupee weakens by 10% in your second year, your costs in LKR jump overnight. Add a buffer of 10–15% in rupees on top of your total. If you can, convert part of the money for future years into a foreign currency account early.

How to bring the cost down

  • Choose universities in lower-cost states such as the Midwest or the South, not New York or California.
  • Start at a community college for 2 years, then transfer to a university (the "2+2" route). This can save you half the tuition.
  • Apply to universities known for generous merit scholarships for international students (see below).
  • Share housing off campus after your first year.

Scholarships in USA for Sri Lankan Students (What Actually Works)

"Full scholarship to the USA" is the most searched dream, and the most misunderstood. Here is where the money really comes from.

1. Need-based aid (bachelor's degree)

A small group of highly selective US universities, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT and Amherst, promise to meet 100% of a family's financial need, even for international students. If your family income is low, the real cost can be close to zero. These places are very competitive, so you need top grades, strong activities and great essays. You will also fill in the CSS Profile, a financial form, and send your parents' income documents. Many other colleges give partial need-based aid to international students too.

2. Merit scholarships

Many public and private universities give automatic or competitive scholarships based on grades and test scores. They usually cover USD 5,000–25,000 per year. They rarely cover everything, but they can make a mid-level university cheaper than a "free" university in another country. A high SAT score often triggers these awards.

3. Assistantships (master's and PhD)

This is the best funding route for graduates. A Teaching Assistantship (TA) or Research Assistantship (RA) can cover your full tuition and pay a monthly stipend. Most PhD programs in science and engineering are funded this way. For master's students, funding is harder to get but possible. Email professors whose research matches your final-year project, and do it before you apply.

4. Fulbright and EducationUSA

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program funds graduate study for Sri Lankans and is run by the US–Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission in Colombo. The same office runs EducationUSA Sri Lanka, the US government's official advising centre. It offers group sessions, low-cost one-on-one advising and information on financial aid.

Paying US Fees from Sri Lanka: Cards, Transfers and Forex Rules

Here is a problem students rarely expect. You finish your application, click "pay," and your Sri Lankan debit card is declined. Banks sometimes block or limit international online payments. Here is how to avoid getting stuck:

  • Before application season, ask your bank to turn on international online transactions and raise your limit.
  • Think about a foreign currency account with a card linked to it. This makes it easier to pay application fees, the SEVIS fee and the CSS Profile.
  • Ask for fee waivers. Many US universities will waive the application fee if you ask, especially if you can show financial need. Some also waive it if you attended their online sessions.
  • A relative abroad can pay small fees for you. Keep the receipts.

Sending tuition and living money later: Sri Lankan rules allow parents to send money for tuition, course fees and living costs to a student abroad. You do this through a licensed commercial bank, with documents such as your I-20, admission letter and fee invoice. Open a student file with your bank early, because some banks are faster than others.

Bank Balance for US Student Visa from Sri Lanka

There is no fixed minimum bank balance. What you must show is the amount on your I-20. This is usually your first-year total cost (tuition plus living costs), so expect LKR 9–27 million depending on your university. You also need a believable plan for the remaining years.

What visa officers in Colombo look at

  • Where the money came from. A large deposit made 1–2 months before your interview is a red flag. Money that has stayed in the account for 6+ months looks much stronger.
  • Whether it matches your sponsor's income. If your father earns LKR 150,000 a month but has LKR 20 million in the bank, be ready to explain how: a land sale, a business, savings over many years, or a fixed deposit that matured.
  • Consistency. The numbers on your I-20, your bank letters and your spoken answers must match.

Property-rich, cash-poor? You are not alone.

Many Sri Lankan families have their wealth in land, a house or a business, not in cash. Property helps show your family's strength and your ties to Sri Lanka. But it is not liquid money to pay tuition. Use it alongside:

  • An education loan sanction letter from a Sri Lankan bank (often secured by property)
  • Fixed deposits and savings accounts
  • Any scholarship or assistantship letter, which is the strongest proof of all

Show amounts in both LKR and USD, using one exchange rate everywhere. Compare education loan options here.

Common US Embassy Colombo student visa interview questions

Interviews are short, often only 2–5 minutes, so every answer counts. Be ready for questions like these:

  • "Why this university?" Give a specific reason: a course, a lab, a professor or an internship link. Saying "it's highly ranked" is not enough.
  • "Why not study in Sri Lanka?" Explain what this program offers that you cannot get at home. Don't criticise Sri Lanka.
  • "Who is paying, and how much does it cost?" Know the exact I-20 figure, your sponsor's job and their income.
  • "What will you do after graduation?" Give a clear career plan linked to Sri Lanka, for example a role in the IT/BPO sector, your family business or a specific industry.
  • "Which other universities did you apply to?" Your list should make sense for one field. A random list looks like you just want to get into the USA, not study.

Don't memorise scripts. Officers can tell, and it often leads to refusals. Practise with our full F1 interview question bank.

Got a 214(b) refusal? Here's what to do

A 214(b) refusal usually means the officer wasn't convinced you will return to Sri Lanka, or that your plan is genuine. It is not a lifetime ban. You can apply again, but only after something real has changed. That could be stronger funding proof, a clearer study plan, a better-matched university, or a scholarship. Applying again with the same documents and the same answers usually gets the same result.

Can Sri Lankan Students Work in USA? Part-Time, OPT and After

  • During studies: you can work on campus up to 20 hours a week during semesters, and full-time in holidays. Jobs include the library, dining hall, labs and teaching assistant roles. Off-campus work is only allowed in special cases, such as CPT internships that are part of your course.
  • Be realistic: on-campus wages help with food and daily costs. They will not pay your tuition. Visa officers know this too, so never say "I'll pay my fees by working."
  • After graduation (OPT): you can work for up to 12 months in your field. STEM graduates (IT, engineering, science, maths) can get a 24-month extension, which means up to 3 years in total.
  • H-1B work visa: the lottery now favours higher-paid jobs. A USD 100,000 fee applies to new H-1B petitions for people outside the US, but not to students who change status from OPT while still inside the US. Staying in status during OPT really matters.

First-Semester Surprises Sri Lankan Students Should Prepare For

  • Winter is serious. In northern states it goes well below 0°C. Buy a proper coat after you arrive. It's cheaper there than in Colombo.
  • Class participation counts. Speaking up in class, quizzes and homework all go towards your final grade. It's not just one big exam like A/Ls.
  • Cooking saves money. Rice, dhal and spices are easy to find at Indian and Asian grocery stores in most cities.
  • Find your community. Many universities have Sri Lankan or South Asian student associations that help new students with airport pickups and housing.
  • Get a US SIM and bank account in week one. You need them for almost everything.

USA vs UK, Canada and Australia for Sri Lankan Students

The USA usually costs more than the UK for a master's, because a US master's takes 1.5–2 years and a UK one takes 1 year. But the USA offers more funding through assistantships, up to 3 years of work after a STEM degree, and A/L entry without a foundation year. The UK is faster and cheaper overall. Canada and Australia have clearer routes to permanent residency. Compare properly before you decide:

FAQs: Study in USA from Sri Lanka

Can I study in USA after O/L?

Not directly for a bachelor's degree. US universities expect 12–13 years of school. After O/L, complete your A/Ls (local, Edexcel or Cambridge), or a recognised foundation or diploma that leads to a US degree.

How much money is needed to study in USA from Sri Lanka?

Plan for about LKR 9–27 million per year for tuition and living costs, depending on the university and the city. For the visa, you must show at least the first-year cost listed on your I-20. Keep an extra 10–15% buffer for exchange rate changes.

Is IELTS compulsory to study in USA from Sri Lanka?

No. Most universities accept IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo. Some will waive the test if your previous studies were in English. Check each university's rules.

Can I do a masters in USA with a 3-year degree from Sri Lanka?

Sometimes. Some universities accept 3-year degrees, but others don't. You can improve your chances with a 1-year postgraduate diploma, a local master's, or a US bridge program. Always check the university's Sri Lanka requirements before you apply.

Is it hard to get a US student visa from Sri Lanka?

It's very doable if your funding is clear, your study plan is genuine and your answers are consistent. Most refusals happen because of unclear money sources or weak study plans, not because of nationality.

Are there fully funded scholarships in USA for Sri Lankan students?

Yes, but they are competitive. They include need-based aid at universities that meet full need for international students, funded PhD assistantships, and the Fulbright program for graduate study.
