What Is a Permanent Parent Visa in Australia?

A permanent parent visa lets the parent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen live in Australia permanently. Places are limited every year, so most parent visas involve a long queue.

Families can choose between contributory visas, which cost more but are processed sooner, and non contributory visas, which cost less but take much longer.

Parent Visa Australia Benefits

  • Live in Australia permanently with your children and grandchildren
  • Work and study in Australia
  • Enrol in Medicare once you hold a permanent visa
  • Travel in and out of Australia for 5 years from grant
  • Apply for Australian citizenship once eligible

Parent Visa Australia Options Compared

Choosing the right visa is the most important decision. Each option has a different cost, waiting time and location rule.

Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143)

A permanent visa with a higher fee paid in two instalments. It has a much shorter queue than non contributory visas.

Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173)

A 2 year temporary visa that lets you split the contribution and later apply for the permanent 143.

Parent visa (subclass 103)

A permanent visa with a much lower fee, but a very long queue that can take decades.

Aged Parent visa (subclass 804)

An onshore permanent visa for parents of Australian pension age who are in Australia when they apply. It also has a very long queue.

Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864)

The onshore contributory version for parents of pension age, with a shorter queue than the 804.

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870)

A temporary visa for stays of 3 or 5 years, with no balance of family test. It does not lead to permanent residence by itself.

Permanent Parent Visa Requirements

  • Your child is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • Your child is settled, which usually means living lawfully in Australia for at least 2 years
  • You meet the balance of family test
  • An Assurance of Support is provided for permanent parent visas
  • You meet health and character requirements
  • You have no unpaid debts to the Australian Government

Balance of Family Test Explained

To pass, at least half of your children must live permanently in Australia, or more of your children must live permanently in Australia than in any other single country.

For example, if you have two children and one lives permanently in Australia while the other lives in Sri Lanka, you usually pass. We check your family carefully, including stepchildren, before you apply.

Parent Visa Processing Time and Backlog

Parent visas are capped and queued, so waiting times are long. At the time of writing, Home Affairs estimates about 15 years for new Contributory Parent visa applications and about 33 years for non contributory Parent and Aged Parent visas.

Waiting times change with each year's planning levels, so we check the current Home Affairs estimate for your family.

Assurance of Support Explained

An Assurance of Support is a promise, usually from the sponsoring child, to support the parent financially so they do not rely on government payments. It is assessed by Services Australia and usually includes a refundable bond.

The assurer must meet an income test. We help you prepare this so it does not delay the grant.

Why Use Parent Visa Consultants?

Parent visas involve large sums of money and many years of waiting. These are the real problems families face, and where a registered migration agent helps most.

Choosing the wrong visa

Picking a visa your parents cannot realistically wait for, or cannot afford, wastes years. We compare every option for your family.

Failing the balance of family test

Families with children in several countries can fail the test without realising it.

Health and age concerns

Older parents may face health requirements that affect timing. Planning early helps.

Keeping parents close while waiting

A temporary 870 or a visitor visa can help parents spend time in Australia during the long wait.
