Australia Student Visa Changes From 2 October 2026

New Home Affairs rules apply to student visa applications lodged on or after 2 October 2026. Applications lodged before that date are assessed under the earlier rules.

Apply from outside Australia

Most temporary visa holders in Australia, including visitor and working holiday visa holders, can no longer apply for a student visa while in Australia. They must be outside Australia when they apply and when the visa is granted.

Further student visas

Most current student visa holders who want another student visa must now apply from outside Australia, unless a limited exemption applies.

Family members are limited

Student visa applicants can no longer include a partner or dependent children unless an exemption applies. This also applies to applications for a further student visa. Exemptions include PhD students, DFAT or Defence sponsored students, foreign government scholarship recipients, and eligible students from Pacific and ASEAN countries.

No adding family after grant

Current student visa holders cannot add family members after their student visa has been granted. There are no exemptions to this rule.

Family already on your visa

If your family members are already included on your current student visa, you may be able to include them in your next student visa if you apply in Australia, need up to 12 more months to finish your main course, or your education provider defaulted. All applicants must be in the same location when you apply.

What this means for Sri Lankan students: most students should plan to study in Australia on their own and apply from Sri Lanka. If you are married or have children, speak to us before you choose a course, so you understand your family's options.

Why Choose Australian Student Visa Agents in Sri Lanka?

Australia has tightened its student visa rules in recent years. These are the areas where applicants most often need help from experienced Australia student visa agents in Sri Lanka.

The Genuine Student requirement

You must explain why you chose your course, provider and Australia, and how it fits your background and career plans. Weak or copied answers are a common reason for refusal.

Financial capacity

You must show funds for living costs, tuition and travel, with a clear and traceable history. Large recent deposits raise concerns.

Choosing the right course and provider

Your course must suit your previous studies and goals. A course that looks like a step backwards can weaken your application.

Complete and correct documents

Home Affairs can decide an application at any time after lodgement. Missing documents or errors can lead to delays or refusal, and the visa fee is not refunded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the best student visa consultants in Sri Lanka for Australia?

The best student visa consultants in Sri Lanka give you honest course advice, explain their fees in writing, check your financial documents carefully, stay up to date with rule changes and work with a registered migration agent. Avoid anyone who guarantees a visa, because only Home Affairs decides.

How do I apply for an Australian student visa from Sri Lanka?

Get an offer from a CRICOS registered provider, accept it to receive your Confirmation of Enrolment, buy OSHC, prepare your financial documents and Genuine Student answers, and lodge your Subclass 500 application online through ImmiAccount while you are in Sri Lanka.

What changed for Australian student visas on 2 October 2026?

Most temporary visa holders must now apply from outside Australia, most student visa holders must apply offshore for a further student visa, and family members can only be included if an exemption applies.

Can I include my partner and children in my student visa?

For applications lodged on or after 2 October 2026, only if an exemption applies, such as PhD students, DFAT or Defence sponsored students, foreign government scholarship recipients, or eligible students from Pacific and ASEAN countries. This also applies when you apply for a further student visa. If your family is already on your current student visa, you may be able to include them in your next one in limited situations.

Can my family join me later on my student visa?

No. Current student visa holders cannot add family members after their student visa has been granted, and there are no exemptions to this rule. Family members would need a different visa that suits their own circumstances, so speak to us before you plan.

Can I apply for a student visa while I am in Australia?

Most temporary visa holders, including visitor and working holiday visa holders, can no longer lodge a student visa application in Australia. They must apply and be granted the visa from outside Australia.

I already hold a student visa. Can I apply for another one in Australia?

Most current student visa holders must now apply from outside Australia, unless a limited exemption applies. Your current student visa is not affected.

No. Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 are assessed under the rules that applied when they were lodged.

What IELTS score do I need for an Australian student visa?

Most applicants need IELTS 6.0 overall or an equivalent score. IELTS 5.5 may be accepted with at least 10 weeks of packaged English study, or 5.0 with at least 20 weeks. Your university may ask for more.

What is the Genuine Student requirement?

It asks you to explain why you chose your course, provider and Australia, how the course fits your background and career goals, and your circumstances in Sri Lanka.

What is a Confirmation of Enrolment?

A Confirmation of Enrolment, or CoE, is issued by your education provider after you accept your offer and pay your deposit. You need it to lodge your student visa application.

Do I need health insurance for a student visa?

Yes. You must hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your whole stay in Australia.

How long does an Australian student visa take?

Processing times vary from person to person. Complete applications are generally processed faster, so we check every document before lodgement and recommend applying as early as possible.

When are the main intakes in Australia?

The main intakes are February and July, and some courses start in other months. Start planning 6 to 12 months before your intake.

Can I work while studying in Australia?

Yes, if eligible. The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) usually allows 2 years after a bachelor's or coursework master's degree and 3 years after a research master's or PhD. Most applicants must be 35 or under, and the fee is AUD 5,750 from 1 July 2026.

What happens if my student visa is refused?

The visa fee is not refunded. You may be able to apply again with a stronger application that addresses the reasons for refusal, so we review your refusal letter with you first.
