What Is the Germany Opportunity Card?
The Opportunity Card, known in German as the Chancenkarte, is a job seeker residence permit introduced on 1 June 2024. It lets qualified professionals from outside the EU, including Sri Lankans, live in Germany for up to 12 months while they search for skilled work.
During that year you can work part time for up to 20 hours a week and take trial jobs of up to two weeks with each employer. Once you receive a suitable job offer you can switch to a work permit such as the EU Blue Card or a skilled worker residence permit.

Germany Opportunity Card Requirements
There are two ways to qualify. Every applicant must also meet the basic requirements for funds and health insurance.
Route 1: Skilled worker
If your degree or vocational qualification is fully recognised in Germany, you qualify as a skilled worker. You do not need to score points or prove language skills for the card itself.
Route 2: Points based
If your qualification is not fully recognised, you need a degree or at least two years of vocational training recognised in Sri Lanka, German at A1 or English at B2, and a score of at least 6 points.

Recognition is the step most Sri Lankan applicants find confusing. Your university and degree are checked in the anabin database, and many applicants also need a Statement of Comparability from the ZAB, Germany's Central Office for Foreign Education.

The Chancenkarte is your entry point. Once you find qualified work, you switch to an EU Blue Card or a skilled worker residence permit without leaving Germany.
If you find a job that does not yet meet the conditions for another permit, a follow up Opportunity Card may let you stay for up to two more years while working in that role.
Blue Card holders can apply for permanent settlement after 27 months, or after 21 months with B1 German. Skilled workers can usually apply after three years. Your family can join you once you move to a work permit, or your partner can apply for their own Opportunity Card alongside you.

How long does the Opportunity Card take to process?
Processing can range from several weeks to a few months depending on embassy workload and how complete your file is. Recognition through ZAB can add extra time, so we recommend starting early.
Is the Germany Opportunity Card the same as the job seeker visa?
The Opportunity Card replaced the older Germany job seeker visa in June 2024. It offers more flexibility, including part time work and trial jobs during your search.
