What Is the Skills in Demand 482 Visa?
The Skills in Demand visa is Australia's main temporary employer sponsored work visa. It replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) 482 visa in December 2024 and keeps the same subclass number.
An approved Australian employer sponsors you for a specific role. You can work in that role for up to 4 years, and you may later move to permanent residence through the subclass 186 visa.

Your stream depends mainly on your occupation and your salary.
Core Skills stream
For occupations on the Core Skills Occupation List, with a salary of at least AUD 79,423 for nominations lodged from 1 July 2026. Most applicants use this stream.
Specialist Skills stream
For highly paid roles with a salary of at least AUD 146,576 from 1 July 2026. Trades workers, machinery operators, drivers and labourers cannot use this stream.
Labour Agreement stream
For workers nominated under a labour agreement, including regional Designated Area Migration Agreements. The rules follow the agreement.
Australia 482 Visa Requirements
- A nomination from an approved Australian sponsor
- At least 1 year of relevant full time work experience, or the part time equivalent, in the last 5 years
- The skills to do the job, and a skills assessment if your occupation or country requires one
- A salary at or above the market rate and the income threshold for your stream
- English at the required level, unless you are exempt
- Adequate health insurance for your stay
- Health and character requirements for you and your family

482 Visa English and Band Requirements
Most applicants need at least IELTS 5 in each band, or an equivalent score in another accepted test such as PTE. Some applicants are exempt, for example citizens of certain English speaking countries or people who earn above a high salary level.

482 Visa Age Limit
There is no age limit for the Skills in Demand visa. However, if you plan to move to permanent residence through the subclass 186, you usually need to be under 45 when you apply for the 186, unless an exemption applies. We plan your timing so this does not close the door.
