Is IELTS Required for a Germany Student Visa?
IELTS is not a fixed visa rule. The embassy asks for proof of skills in the language your course is taught in, and your university decides which test and score it accepts.
English-taught courses
Most universities ask for IELTS, TOEFL or PTE. Prepare with our IELTS training in Sri Lanka.
German-taught courses
Universities usually ask for a recognised German certificate such as TestDaF or DSH. The required level depends on the course.
Do you need German for an English course?
No, but basic German helps with daily life, part-time jobs and your visa interview.
Studying in Germany after A/Ls
Your A/L results decide whether you get direct entry or need a one-year foundation course (Studienkolleg) first.
Germany Student Visa Work Hours and Work Permit After Study
International students can work 140 full days or 280 half days a year. After graduating, you can stay for up to 18 months to look for a job in your field.

- Student assistant jobs at your university are treated more flexibly
- Part-time income supports you but does not replace the blocked account

- Switch to an EU Blue Card or skilled worker permit once you have a job offer
- Already a graduate? Compare the Germany Opportunity Card route
Germany Student Visa Consultant, Agent or Lawyer: Which Do You Need?
Most Sri Lankan students need a consultant, not a lawyer. A Germany student visa consultant handles course selection and your visa file, while a lawyer is only needed for legal disputes such as challenging a refusal.
| Who | What they do | When you need them |
|---|---|---|
| Germany student visa consultant | Assesses your profile, shortlists universities, reviews documents, guides the blocked account and prepares you for the embassy interview | From the start of your application |
| Germany student visa agent | Usually represents specific universities or colleges and submits applications to them on your behalf | When you have already chosen one of their partner institutions |
| Immigration lawyer | Gives legal advice and represents you in legal proceedings | If your visa is refused and you want to challenge the decision in Germany |
GIEC Global is an education and migration consultancy, not a law firm. No consultant, agent or lawyer can guarantee a visa, because only the German Embassy decides. See all our education consultant services.

Germany Student Visa Consultant FAQs for Sri Lankan Students
Do I need a consultant for a Germany student visa?
No, it is not mandatory. You can apply on your own at the German Embassy in Colombo. A Germany student visa consultant helps you choose the right course, avoid document mistakes and submit a complete file the first time.
What does a Germany study visa consultant do?
A consultant assesses your profile, shortlists universities, helps with applications and your motivation letter, guides you through the blocked account and checks your visa file against the embassy checklist.
What is the difference between a Germany student visa agent and a consultant?
An agent usually represents specific institutions and applies to them for you. A consultant advises on all suitable options and supports the full process, from course selection to the visa appointment.
Do I need a lawyer for a Germany student visa?
No. A standard student visa application does not need a lawyer. A lawyer is mainly relevant if your visa is refused and you want to challenge the decision legally in Germany.
Can a consultant or agent guarantee a Germany student visa?
No. Only the German Embassy decides, and even a complete file does not guarantee approval. Avoid any agent who promises a guaranteed visa.
How do I choose the best consultancy for study in Germany in Sri Lanka?
Look for clear written fees, honest advice about your chances, no visa guarantees and no pressure to use false documents. False documents lead to refusal and further consequences.
Is the first consultation with GIEC Global free?
Yes. The first consultation is free. A counsellor reviews your results, budget and intake, then explains which services you need before you commit to anything.
How much bank balance is required for a Germany student visa?
You need at least €11,904 in a blocked account for one year, which is released at €992 per month after you arrive in Germany.
What is the Germany student visa fee in Sri Lankan rupees?
The fee is EUR 75, paid in Sri Lankan rupees at the embassy's exchange rate on the day of your appointment. It is not refunded if the visa is refused.
Do Sri Lankan students need an APS certificate for Germany?
No. The APS certificate applies to applicants from India, China and Vietnam. Sri Lankan students do not need it.
Is IELTS required for a Germany student visa?
IELTS is not a fixed visa rule. You need proof of skills in the language your course is taught in, and your university decides which test and score it accepts.
How long does the Germany student visa take from Sri Lanka?
Processing takes at least several weeks because your file is also sent to the immigration office in Germany. Plan for up to three months and apply 4 to 6 months before your semester.
Where do I apply for a Germany student visa in Sri Lanka?
You apply in person at the German Embassy in Colombo after registering for a national visa appointment.
Can I work on a Germany student visa?
Yes. International students can work 140 full days or 280 half days per year alongside their studies.
Can I study in Germany for free?
Most public universities charge no tuition fees, only a semester contribution. You still need the blocked account amount to cover your living costs.
Can I study in Germany after A/Ls?
Yes, but it depends on your A/L results. Some students get direct entry, while others need a one-year foundation course called Studienkolleg first.
What happens if my Germany student visa is rejected?
The fee is not refunded, and the rejection notice lets you unblock your blocked account. You can reapply with a stronger file, and a consultant can review what went wrong.
Is there an age limit for a Germany student visa?
There is no official age limit. Older applicants and those with study gaps should explain their study plan and career goals clearly in the motivation letter.
