Australia Student Visa Rules for Sri Lankan Students in 2026
Australia has one student visa for every level of study. School, vocational courses, English courses, degrees and research all fall under subclass 500. The visa lets you stay for the length of your course up to a maximum of five years.
The main rules have changed a lot in the last two years. Here is what applies now:
- The Genuine Student requirement replaced the old GTE statement in March 2024.
- The living cost amount rose to AUD 29,710 in May 2024.
- New English test rules started on 7 August 2025.
- The visa fee rose to AUD 2,500 on 1 July 2026.
- A CoE is needed to apply. A Letter of Offer alone is not enough.
Australia student visa age limit
There is no upper age limit for this visa. You must be at least 6 years old. School students face age limits for each year level. If you are under 18 you must also have approved welfare arrangements in place for your stay.

| Confirmation of Enrolment | One CoE for each course in your study package. |
| English test | Result from an approved test taken at a test centre within the last two years. |

Scan every page in colour. Incomplete applications take longer and can be refused without a further request.
English Test Scores for a Visa for Study in Australia

| Your study plan | IELTS overall | PTE Academic overall |
|---|---|---|
| Main course only | 6.0 | 47 |
| Main course plus at least 10 weeks of English (ELICOS) | 5.5 | 39 |
| Main course plus at least 20 weeks of English (ELICOS) | 5.0 | 31 |
Home Affairs also accepts TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced, OET, LANGUAGECERT Academic, CELPIP General and MET. Tests taken online at home are not accepted. See the Study Australia list of language tests for details.

Many students search for show money for Australia student visa Sri Lanka applicants need. Home Affairs calls it financial capacity. You must show enough money for travel, 12 months of course fees and 12 months of living costs.
| Who | Living costs for 12 months |
|---|---|
| Student | AUD 29,710 |
| Partner coming with you | AUD 10,394 |
| Each child coming with you | AUD 4,449 |
Example: a single student with first year tuition of AUD 30,000 needs AUD 59,710 plus the cost of flights. Any deposit already paid to the university reduces the tuition part.
What counts as proof
- Money held in a bank or other financial institution
- A loan from a bank or a government
- A scholarship or sponsorship letter
- Proof that your parents or partner earned at least AUD 87,856 in the last year (AUD 102,500 if family members come with you)
The money must be real and you must be able to use it. Explain the source with payslips, business records, property sale deeds or fixed deposit papers. Borrowed deposits that leave the account after the visa is granted are a serious risk. The Australian High Commission in Colombo warns that giving false information is a serious offence.
Australia Student Visa Cost and Fees in 2026
Your total cost has two parts: the government charge and the items you pay to others. The Australia student visa price below is the charge set in the Migration Regulations from 1 July 2026.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Visa application charge for the student | From AUD 2,500 |
| Partner or family member aged 18 or over | AUD 1,530 |
| Child under 18 | AUD 500 |
| OSHC health cover | Depends on the insurer and length of stay |
| English test | Set by the test centre |
| Medical examination | Paid to the approved clinic |
| Biometrics appointment | A service charge may apply at the centre |
You pay the Australia student visa fees in Australian dollars by card inside ImmiAccount. Home Affairs does not refund the charge if the visa is refused. Confirm the amount with the Home Affairs visa pricing page before you pay.
Australia Student Visa Evidence Levels: Where Sri Lanka Stands
Home Affairs looks at two things to decide how much paperwork you must upload: your passport country and your education provider. People call these evidence levels.
Home Affairs does not publish a public list of country levels. Education industry reports place Sri Lanka at Evidence Level 2 in 2026. In practice most Sri Lankan students should be ready to upload full financial and English evidence when they lodge.
The Document Checklist Tool gives the official answer for your case. Even when the tool does not ask for a document an officer can still request it later.
Genuine Student Requirement for Your Study in Australia Visa
Every study in Australia visa application includes the Genuine Student questions. You answer them in English inside the online form. Study Australia lists what the questions cover:
- Your current life including family, community, job and finances
- Why you chose this course and why you chose Australia
- How the course will benefit your future
- Your study history in Australia if you have any
- Anything else you want the officer to know
Keep each answer short and personal. Name the subjects you will study and the job you want afterwards. Explain why a similar course in Sri Lanka does not meet your goal. Then back each claim with a document.

Biometrics, Health and Character Checks for an Australia Visa from Sri Lanka
Anyone applying for an Australia visa from Sri Lanka must complete three checks.
Biometrics in Colombo
The High Commission states that all visa applicants located in Sri Lanka must provide biometrics. You book an appointment at the Australian Visa Application Centre in Colombo. VFS Global runs the centre for the Australian Government. Staff take your photo and fingerprints. Each person in the application must attend.
Health examination
Most students need a medical examination with a clinic approved by Home Affairs. The High Commission recommends doing the medical before you lodge to avoid delays. You can arrange this through the My Health Declarations service in ImmiAccount.
Character
You answer questions about your past conduct in the form. Home Affairs may ask for a police clearance certificate from Sri Lanka.
Australia Student Visa Working Hours and Conditions
The Australia student visa working hours limit is 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session. A fortnight means 14 days starting on a Monday.
- You can work unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.
- You cannot work before your course starts.
- Students in a masters by research or a doctoral degree have no work limit once the course begins.
You must also stay enrolled, keep up your attendance, keep your OSHC active and tell your provider your address within 7 days of arrival. Breaking a condition can lead to visa cancellation.
Australia Student Visa Dependent Rules: Bringing Your Family

- Declare every family member in your form even if they stay in Sri Lanka.
- Show extra living costs for each person plus school fees for school age children.
- Buy health cover for the whole family.

Book a consultationWhy an Australia Student Visa Sri Lanka Application Gets Refused
Most refusals come from a small set of avoidable problems.
- Genuine Student answers that are vague or copied
- Funds with no clear source or history
- A course that does not fit your past study or work
- Documents that are false or altered
- Missed deadlines for biometrics or medicals
- Study gaps with no explanation
Fix these before you lodge. A refusal stays on your record and the fee is not returned.
Australia Student Visa Consultant in Sri Lanka: How GIEC Global Helps
