Australia PR for Business Analysts from Sri Lanka: The Complete 2026 Guide
Yes, a Business Analyst can get PR in Australia. The occupation is ICT Business Analyst, ANZSCO 261111. Right now the realistic routes are state nomination (190 or 491) and employer sponsorship (482 to 186). The 189 visa has not invited Business Analysts since November 2024, so do not build your plan around it.
An ICT Business Analyst works with users to write system requirements, maps business processes, and helps developers build software solutions. Non-ICT Business Analysts, such as management consultants, belong to a different group (Management and Organisation Analysts, unit group 2247), with a different assessing body and list status .
This matters a lot in Sri Lanka. Many “Business Analysts” in banks, insurance companies and finance teams spend most of their time on reports, budgets or process work, not software. Before you pay for ACS, compare your daily tasks with the 261111 duties. Your job title does not decide the outcome; your duties do. Titles such as Business Systems Analyst, Requirements Analyst or Product Owner can still fit 261111 if the work is the same.
Business Analyst PR chances in Australia: the 2026 reality
The last 189 invitation for ICT Business Analysts was on 7 November 2024, at 95 points. There were no 189 invitations for this occupation in the three federal rounds since: 21 August 2025, 13 November 2025 and 4 June 2026.
The queue is also long. In September 2026, 7,875 Expressions of Interest (EOIs) were waiting for 261111 in the 189 pool, and 3,136 of them had 85 points or more. The 2025-26 occupation ceiling for the ICT Business and Systems Analysts group was 500 places, and it was already used up by state and employer visas.
So where do Business Analyst PR grants actually come from? The 2024-25 figures show it clearly:
Visa | Grants to ICT Business Analysts, 2024-25 | Share |
|---|---|---|
190 State Nominated | 866 | 51% |
186 Employer Sponsored | 446 | 26% |
491 Regional | 259 | 15% |
189 Independent | 114 | 7% |
Total | 1,685 | 100% |

ICT Business Analyst Australia PR Requirements
If you are a Sri Lankan professional considering skilled migration to Australia as an ICT Business Analyst, review the following requirements before deciding which visa pathway to pursue.
- Age: Generally, you must be under 45 when invited to apply for a points-tested skilled visa, subject to the applicable rules and any relevant exceptions.
- Skills assessment: A suitable assessment is generally required for the nominated occupation. ICT Business Analyst is ANZSCO 261111, assessed by the Australian Computer Society (ACS), subject to the applicable assessment criteria.
- English proficiency: Competent English is generally the minimum for points-tested skilled migration. For IELTS, this normally means at least 6 in each test component. Higher English proficiency may increase your points.
- Points score: You generally need at least 65 points to be eligible to submit an Expression of Interest for a points-tested visa. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee an invitation.
- Health and character: Applicants must satisfy the applicable health and character requirements. Police certificates may be required for Sri Lanka and other relevant countries.
- State nomination: Subclass 190 and 491 applicants must meet the nomination criteria of the relevant state or territory, where applicable. Occupation lists and eligibility criteria can change.
ACS skills assessment for Business Analysts from Sri Lanka
The ACS assessment is the first big step and often the slowest. It checks two things: whether your degree has enough ICT content, and how many years of your work count as “skilled”. The standard Skills assessment costs A$1,498, and ACS allows 4 to 6 weeks if it does not ask for more information. A positive result is valid for 2 years.
ACS does not count all of your experience. It deducts some years first, depending on your degree. Here is how that works for typical Sri Lankan qualifications:
Your qualification | ACS outcome | Years deducted |
|---|---|---|
BSc in IT, Computer Science or Information Systems, and BA work closely related to it | ICT major, closely related | 2 |
ICT degree, but BA work not closely related to the subjects | ICT major, not closely related | 4 |
BBA, BCom or Management degree with some IT or MIS subjects | ICT minor | 5 |
No degree, or a degree with no ICT content | RPL report needed | 6 |
Whether your degree is “closely related” depends on your transcript, so check your subjects carefully. If you need the RPL route, see our ACS RPL report guide.
How to get Australian PR from Sri Lanka: step by step
If you are wondering how to apply for PR in Australia from Sri Lanka, follow these steps in order. Some can run at the same time, such as English preparation while ACS is assessing your file.
- Check your duties. Compare your real tasks with the ICT Business Analyst (261111) description. If your work is mostly finance or process with no systems, get advice before going further.
- Apply for your ACS skills assessment. Send your degree, transcripts, detailed reference letters and CV.
- Sit PTE or IELTS in Colombo. Aim for Superior (PTE 79 or IELTS 8 in each part). Your result must be within 3 years of your visa application.
- Take NAATI CCL in Sinhala or Tamil for 5 extra points.
- Count your points honestly. Only claim what you can prove with documents.
- Lodge your EOI in SkillSelect. Tick 190 and 491, and choose the states you are open to. You can also tick 189.
- Apply for state nomination when a state opens and lists 261111.
- Receive your invitation and lodge the visa application within 60 days.
- Do your health exam and police checks. Use a Home Affairs approved panel clinic in Sri Lanka, and get a Sri Lanka Police clearance plus one from any country where you lived 12 months or more in the last 10 years.
- Get your grant and plan your move. Check the first-entry date on your grant letter.
Employer route: business analyst visa sponsorship jobs in Australia
If your points are not high enough, the employer route is often the most reliable plan. An Australian employer sponsors you on the 482 Skills in Demand visa (Core Skills stream). You need at least 1 year of relevant experience, and your salary must be at least A$79,423 in 2026-27 . After 2 years with that employer, you can move to PR through the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream.
If you already have 3 years of experience, a positive ACS assessment and an employer willing to nominate you, the 186 Direct Entry stream gives PR straight away. Home Affairs reported processing times of 21 to 25 months for it on 29 September 2026. Read our guide to the 482 Skills in Demand visa for the employer side.
Tips for finding sponsorship from Sri Lanka:
- Search Seek and LinkedIn for “business analyst visa sponsorship” roles.
- If you already work for Australian clients from Colombo, ask your company about onsite or transfer roles.
- Never pay anyone for a job offer or sponsorship. That is a common scam.
Study route: business analyst masters in Australia
Some Sri Lankans study a master’s in Australia, then work on a 485 visa, then apply for 190 or 491. Australian study can add points for study (5), regional study (5) and a Professional Year (5), and Australian work experience earns more points than overseas work. The 2026-27 program also favours people already in Australia.
One warning: a master’s in business analytics is not the same as working as an ICT Business Analyst. Analytics courses are about data. Your PR claim depends on your ACS outcome and your work duties, not the course name. Check a course’s ICT content against ACS rules before you enrol. Our study in Australia from Sri Lanka guide explains the student visa (A$2,500 from 1 July 2026).

Common mistakes Sri Lankan BAs make
- Choosing the wrong code. Claiming 261111 when your work is mainly finance or management analysis can lead to a negative ACS result.
- Using a basic HR letter. Without a full duty list, ACS may not count your experience.
- Stopping at Proficient English. Superior is worth 10 more points.
- Waiting only for 189. It has been paused for BAs since November 2024.
- Trusting unregistered agents. Check any agent on the official register at mara.gov.au.
- Believing points-test rumours. Until Home Affairs publishes the new rules, the current table applies.
