Australia PR for Electronics Engineers from Sri Lanka: Complete 2026 Guide (ANZSCO 233411)

If you are an electronics engineer in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Jaffna or anywhere else in Sri Lanka, Australia is probably on your mind. Thousands of Sri Lankan engineers already live and work there. But the rules keep changing: new visa fees, new processing priorities, and a points test reform on the way.

Sri Lankan electronics engineers can get Australian PR. Electronics Engineer (ANZSCO 233411) is on the long-term skilled list, so you can use the 189, 190 and 491 visas. You need a positive Engineers Australia assessment, at least "Competent" English and 65+ points. Competition is very high, though. In the June 2026 Subclass 189 round, electronics engineers needed 95 points. Most applicants should plan for state nomination (190/491) or employer sponsorship as well as the 189.

Can a Sri Lankan Electronics Engineer Get Australia PR in 2026?

Yes. Australia does not choose migrants by nationality. Sri Lankans compete on the same points system as everyone else. What matters is your occupation, your skills assessment, your English, your age and your experience.

The basic pathway to Australian PR from Sri Lanka for an electronics engineer has six steps:

  1. Get a positive skills assessment from Engineers Australia (EA) as an Electronics Engineer (233411).
  2. Take an English test (IELTS, PTE, TOEFL iBT, OET or Cambridge C1). Aim high, because English is the easiest place to gain points.
  3. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect for the 189, 190 and/or 491 visa.
  4. Receive an invitation from Home Affairs (189) or a nomination from a state (190/491).
  5. Lodge your visa application with medicals, police clearances and all your documents.
  6. Get your grant and make your first entry to Australia before the date set in your grant letter.

The process is clear. The hard part is the competition, which we cover honestly below.

Are Electronics Engineers in Demand in Australia?

On paper, yes. Electronics Engineer (ANZSCO 233411) is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). That list gives access to all the main points-tested PR visas. It is also on the Core Skills Occupation List used for employer-sponsored visas. NSW includes the Electronics Engineers unit group (2334) on its 190 skills list, and other states have listed the occupation in recent years.

Electronics engineers work in defence, telecommunications, mining automation, renewable energy, medical devices and IoT, and these industries keep hiring. National labour market data has also flagged shortages in some states and territories, such as Queensland, South Australia and the ACT.

But "in demand" does not mean "easy". The 189 visa has a small number of places and many applicants. Electronics engineering is popular with engineers from Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and other countries, so invitation scores are among the highest of all engineering occupations.

Is My Sri Lankan Engineering Degree Washington Accord Accredited?

This is the most important question for Sri Lankan engineers. The answer decides whether your assessment is simple (Washington Accord pathway) or long and detailed (CDR pathway).

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) became a full signatory to the Washington Accord on 13 June 2014. Engineers Australia generally accepts your degree under the Washington Accord if all of these are true:

  • It is a four-year, full-time BSc Engineering degree accredited by IESL.
  • Your intake year (the year you started) falls within the accredited period shown on the IESL list.
  • You completed the degree in or after the year Sri Lanka joined. IESL's own list refers to graduates after 13 June 2014.
  • The programme was fully accredited. Provisional accreditation is not enough.

Programmes at state universities such as Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna and Jaffna have appeared on IESL's accredited lists, including Electronic & Telecommunication and Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Accreditation is tied to intake years, though. A degree that is accredited today may not have been accredited when you started.

How to check in 5 minutes: Open the latest "List of Accredited Engineering Degree Programmes" on the IESL website. Then use the qualification checker on the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) website. Find your university, your exact degree name and your intake year. If it is listed as fully accredited, you can likely use the cheaper and faster Washington Accord pathway.

If you graduated before 2014, your degree is not covered by the Accord, even if it came from Moratuwa or Peradeniya. You will need the CDR pathway. Many Reddit and forum posters miss this point.

UK or Australian Top-Up Degree from a Private Campus in Sri Lanka: Washington Accord or CDR?

Many Sri Lankan engineers study at private campuses that offer degrees from UK, Australian or other foreign universities. A common forum question is: "My degree is from a UK university, and the UK is in the Washington Accord. Does that mean I'm covered?"

Usually, no. Under the Accord, each signatory accredits programmes delivered within its own country. A UK degree delivered in Colombo is not automatically treated like the same degree studied in the UK. IESL also accredits only programmes conducted in Sri Lanka, and only the ones it has specifically reviewed.

Some private institutions run IESL-accredited programmes, so check your exact programme, campus and intake year in the IEA checker. If you cannot find it listed as fully accredited, plan for the CDR pathway. That is fine. Many successful Sri Lankan applicants get assessed through a CDR. It takes more work and costs a little more.

NDT, HNDE, BTech or 3-Year Degree Holders: Can You Still Get Australia PR?

Sri Lanka's Washington Accord membership covers four-year professional engineering degrees. Sri Lanka is only a provisional member of the Sydney Accord, which covers engineering technologists. Engineers Australia recognises only full signatories. So if you hold an NDT, HNDE, a three-year BTech or a similar qualification, you will normally go through the CDR pathway.

Depending on your qualification and work, EA may assess you as an Engineering Technologist or Engineering Associate rather than a Professional Engineer. That changes which ANZSCO occupation and visa options are open to you. For example, Electronic Engineering Technician (312412) is on the Core Skills list used for employer sponsorship. Technician-level occupations often have fewer independent PR options than professional engineer roles.

If you hold an NDT or HNDE plus a later degree (for example, a top-up BSc or an MSc), EA may consider your qualifications together. Get proper advice before you choose an occupation, because this choice affects your whole pathway.

Engineers Australia Skills Assessment for Sri Lankan Electronics Engineers: Step by Step

Engineers Australia is the assessing authority for Electronics Engineers. You cannot submit an EOI without a positive outcome letter. Here is how the process works.

Step 1: Create an account on the EA portal

Register on the Engineers Australia portal. You will receive an account ID by email.

Step 2: Choose your pathway

  • Washington Accord pathway: for IESL-accredited four-year degrees within the accredited intake years.
  • CDR (Competency Demonstration Report) pathway: for everyone else, including pre-2014 graduates, private campus degrees, NDT/HNDE holders, and anyone applying in an occupation that differs from their degree title.

Step 3: Prepare your documents

Common documents include your passport, degree certificate, academic transcripts, a CV and evidence of your English. For the CDR pathway you also need:

  • Three Career Episodes: detailed accounts of engineering work you did yourself, such as your final-year project, a design task at work, or a commissioning or testing project.
  • A Summary Statement: this links each career episode to EA's competency elements.
  • A CPD list: your continuing professional development, such as courses, workshops, IESL events and certifications.

Step 4: Decide on the Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment (RSEA)

If you want to claim points for work experience, you can ask EA to assess your employment too. This is optional, but many applicants find it worth the money. It gives you a clear figure for your skilled employment that you can match in your EOI.

Step 5: Submit and wait

EA says standard applications generally take about 15 weeks just to be assigned to an assessor. The outcome can take longer, especially if EA asks for more information. Fast-track gets your file to an assessor within 20 business days, but it does not guarantee a faster outcome.

Engineers Australia fees (2026–27)

Assessment typeFee incl. GST (AUD)
Washington Accord qualification assessment$555.50
Washington Accord + relevant skilled employment$1,034
Standard CDR assessment$1,034
CDR + relevant skilled employment$1,512.50
Fast-track (added to the above)$396
Review of outcome$368.50
Warning about copied CDRs: Engineers Australia checks every CDR for plagiarism. Copying career episodes from the internet or buying ready-made reports can lead to refusal and a ban from re-applying. Write about your own projects at Sri Lankan employers in your own words. Professional review is fine. Copying is not.

Electronics vs Electrical vs Telecommunications Engineer: Which ANZSCO Code Should You Choose?

Many Sri Lankan graduates hold an "Electronic & Telecommunication" or "Electrical & Electronic" degree, so they could fit more than one occupation. Here are the common choices:

OccupationANZSCOTypical work
Electronics Engineer233411Circuit design, embedded systems, signal processing, control and instrumentation, electronic product development
Electrical Engineer233311Power systems, electrical installations, generation, transmission and distribution
Telecommunications Engineer263311Planning and designing telecom systems, RF and radio networks
Telecommunications Network Engineer263312Designing and maintaining telecom network infrastructure

The golden rule: choose the occupation that matches the work you actually did, not the one with lower invitation points. EA assesses your competencies against the occupation you nominate. Home Affairs can later check whether your duties really match. In the June 2026 round, Telecommunications Engineer also needed 95 points, so switching codes is rarely a shortcut anyway.

Note on OSCA: Australia's statistics bureau has released a new occupation classification called OSCA to replace ANZSCO. As of mid-2026, Home Affairs still uses ANZSCO codes for visas, so 233411 is still the code to use. Check for updates before you lodge.

How Many Points Does an Electronics Engineer Need for Australia PR in 2026?

The legal minimum is 65 points. That is only the entry ticket. Invitations go to the highest-ranked EOIs in each occupation.

  • 189 visa: in the 4 June 2026 round, the minimum score invited for Electronics Engineer was 95 points.
  • 190 and 491 visas: states add 5 or 15 points and use their own selection criteria, so scores vary by state and change from round to round.

The first 189 round of the 2026–27 programme year was expected by 30 September 2026, but reports say it was postponed to mid-October 2026. Check the official SkillSelect invitation rounds page for the latest results.

Realistically, if you have 85–90+ points you have a fighting chance. Between 65 and 80, the 189 is very unlikely for this occupation, so focus on state nomination, regional pathways or employer sponsorship.

Smart strategy: Don't bet only on the 189. You can submit an EOI that covers the 189 and selected states for the 190/491 at the same time. That way you are in every pool you qualify for.

Which States Nominate Electronics Engineers? (190 and 491 State Nomination)

Each state and territory publishes its own skills list and rules every financial year. Some general points:

  • New South Wales: The Electronics Engineers unit group (2334) is on the NSW 190 Skills List. NSW selection is very competitive. Offshore applicants must have lived continuously outside Australia for at least six months.
  • Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia: These states have listed Electronics Engineer in recent program years, often with extra conditions for offshore applicants.
  • South Australia, ACT, Tasmania and Northern Territory: These often favour people already living or working in that state, but offshore streams do open at times.

The 2026–27 state programmes have been opening gradually. Western Australia, for example, reportedly held its first round of the year in mid-September 2026. Always check each state's official migration website before you choose, because lists can change mid-year.

Tip for Sri Lankan applicants: If you have family in Australia living in a regional area, you might qualify for the 491 Family Sponsored stream. It gives 15 extra points. Check whether your relative is eligible.

Does Sri Lankan Work Experience Count for Australia PR Points?

Yes. Overseas skilled employment in the last 10 years can give you up to 15 points. There are three conditions:

  • The work must be closely related to Electronics Engineer (233411).
  • It must usually be after you became skilled, which normally means after completing your degree. Engineers Australia states this "skilled date" in your outcome letter if you request an RSEA.
  • It must be at least 20 hours a week and paid.

Evidence that works well for Sri Lankan employment:

  • A reference letter on company letterhead listing your dates, hours, salary and detailed duties
  • Appointment letter and any promotion letters
  • Payslips and bank statements showing salary credits
  • EPF/ETF statements, which are very useful proof of genuine employment
  • Tax records (APIT/PAYE) where available

Internships, training periods or work before graduation usually don't count as skilled employment. Claiming them is one of the most common reasons for refusal.

Employer Sponsorship: Skills in Demand 482 and 186 Visa for Electronics Engineers

If your points are not high enough, an Australian employer can sponsor you.

  • Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), Core Skills stream: Electronics Engineer is on the Core Skills Occupation List. The salary must meet the Core Skills Income Threshold (about AUD 79,400 for nominations from 1 July 2026) or the market rate, whichever is higher.
  • Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186): a permanent visa. You can reach it directly, or through the 482 after working for your sponsor for the required period.
  • Subclass 494: a regional employer-sponsored visa with a path to PR.

Getting a job offer from Sri Lanka is hard but possible. It is easier in sectors like defence electronics, mining automation, telecommunications and renewable energy, especially in regional areas. Update your LinkedIn, use Australian job sites, write an Australian-style CV and show your EA assessment outcome. Employers like candidates who have already been assessed.

How Long Does Australia PR Take from Sri Lanka?

StageTypical time
English test preparation and result1–3 months
CDR writing (if needed)1–2 months
Engineers Australia assessment3–6 months (standard), less with fast-track
Waiting in the EOI poolUnpredictable, from weeks to never, depending on points
Visa processing after lodgementSeveral months to over a year

Overall, most Sri Lankan engineers should plan for 12–24 months, and sometimes longer.

Why offshore applications may take longer now: New processing rules started on 19 September 2026. Home Affairs now processes applications in priority sectors (such as healthcare, teaching and construction) first, then other onshore applicants. Applicants outside Australia in non-priority occupations come later, and this usually includes electronics engineers. Your visa can still be granted, but expect a longer wait if you apply from Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Police Clearance, Medicals and Document Checklist

Sri Lanka Police Clearance Certificate

Apply online through the Sri Lanka Police e-services portal (police.lk, then E-Services, then Clearance Certificates). Upload your passport, NIC and other details, and pay by card. Processing is usually around two weeks. If you have lived 12 months or more in another country in the last 10 years, for example in the Gulf, you also need a police certificate from that country.

Health examinations

After you lodge your visa, you will get a HAP ID. Book your medical at a Home Affairs-approved panel clinic in Sri Lanka. Don't do medicals too early, because they are valid for a limited time.

Document checklist

  • Passport and National Identity Card (NIC)
  • Birth certificate, plus a certified English translation if it is in Sinhala or Tamil
  • Marriage certificate and children's birth certificates (if applicable)
  • Degree certificate, transcripts and Engineers Australia outcome letter
  • English test results
  • Employment evidence (reference letters, payslips, EPF/ETF, bank statements)
  • Partner's skills assessment and English results (if you are claiming partner points)
  • Police certificates and Form 80 (if requested)

Make sure your dates, names and job titles match across your EA application, EOI, visa forms and Form 80. Small mismatches cause big delays.

Should You Study a Master's in Australia First? (Student → 485 → PR)

Many young Sri Lankan engineers take the study route. They complete a Master of Engineering in Australia, get a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), gain Australian experience, then apply for PR.

Advantages:

  • Extra points for Australian study, regional study and a Professional Year
  • Australian work experience, which gives more points and better job prospects
  • Being onshore, which matters more in 2026–27 because a large share of skilled places is going to people already in Australia

Disadvantages: High tuition and living costs, higher visa fees, and no guarantee of PR at the end. The planned points test reform may also reduce or remove some study bonus points.

The study route makes sense if you are young, can afford it and want an Australian qualification anyway. It is a risky choice if PR is your only goal.

Common Mistakes That Get Sri Lankan Engineers Refused

  1. Choosing the wrong occupation just because it seems easier, when your duties don't match.
  2. Copied or template CDRs that EA's plagiarism checks flag.
  3. Claiming experience before your skilled date, or claiming more experience than EA assessed.
  4. Letting your English test expire. Results must be valid at the time of invitation.
  5. Missing an age bracket change. Turning 33 or 40 while waiting reduces your points. Update your EOI on time.
  6. Overclaiming partner points without a valid partner skills assessment.
  7. Using unregistered "agents". Anyone giving Australian immigration advice must be registered. Check their MARN on the official Register of Migration Agents.
  8. Inconsistent information between your EOI, visa application and Form 80.

Get your EOI and documents checked before you lodge. One mistake can cost you over AUD 6,000.

Points Test Changes in 2027: Should Sri Lankan Engineers Apply Now?

In the May 2026 Federal Budget, the Australian Government confirmed it will reform the points test. The aim is to favour younger, higher-skilled migrants with stronger English. The new test is indicated to start from 1 July 2027, after consultation and new legislation.

Until then, the current points test still applies. The details of the new test have not been finalised. Industry discussion covers ideas like a higher minimum score, points for high Australian salaries, and changes to study bonus points, but none of these are law yet.

What this means for you: If you already score well under today's rules, it makes sense to get your skills assessment and English results ready now so you can submit your EOI early. If you are young with excellent English, the new system may still suit you. Either way, don't wait. Your EA assessment takes months, and a ready file gives you options.

FAQs: Australia PR for Electronics Engineers from Sri Lanka

1. Is electronics engineer on the Australia PR occupation list in 2026?

Yes. Electronics Engineer (ANZSCO 233411) is on the MLTSSL, which makes you eligible for the 189, 190 and 491 visas. It is also on the Core Skills Occupation List for employer-sponsored visas.

2. What is the ANZSCO code for electronics engineer?

The code is 233411. Home Affairs still uses ANZSCO codes for visas even though the new OSCA classification has been released, so use 233411 unless official guidance changes.

3. Do I need IESL membership or Chartered Engineer status to get Australia PR?

No. Engineers Australia assesses your degree and competencies directly. IESL membership or CEng is not required, though IESL activities can support your CPD list in a CDR.

4. Can I apply for Australia PR from Sri Lanka without a job offer?

Yes. The 189 needs no sponsor, and the 190 and 491 need state nomination rather than a job offer. A job offer is only needed for employer-sponsored visas like the 482 and 186.

5. Is my Moratuwa or Peradeniya engineering degree accepted under the Washington Accord?

It may be, if it is a four-year IESL-accredited programme, your intake year is within the accredited period, and you graduated in or after 2014. Check the IESL list and the IEA qualification checker to confirm.

6. Is 65 points enough for an electronics engineer to get a 189 invitation?

No, not in practice. In the June 2026 round, electronics engineers needed 95 points for the 189. With 65–80 points, focus on 190/491 state nomination or employer sponsorship.

7. Do Sri Lankans need IELTS or PTE for Australia PR?

Yes. Sri Lankan passport holders must prove their English with an approved test. The minimum is Competent English, but Proficient or Superior gives 10 or 20 extra points.

8. Is the NAATI CCL test available in Sinhala and Tamil?

Yes. NAATI offers the CCL test in both Sinhalese and Tamil. Passing gives you 5 extra points. The test is online and costs AUD 814 in 2026–27. Check NAATI's current rules on where you can sit it from.

9. Can my husband or wife get partner points?

Yes. A skilled partner who is under 45, has Competent English and a positive skills assessment in an eligible occupation gives you 10 points. A partner with only Competent English gives 5 points.

10. How long is the Engineers Australia assessment valid?

EA says its outcome letter is valid indefinitely for its own purposes. For visas, Home Affairs sets its own validity period, commonly three years from the date of issue unless stated otherwise. Check before you submit your EOI.

11. Can I apply for Australia PR if I am over 45?

Not through the 189, 190 or 491. You must be under 45 when you are invited. Some employer-sponsored pathways have exemptions in limited cases.

12. How much bank balance do I need for Australia PR from Sri Lanka?

There is no fixed show-money amount for the 189 or 190 at federal level. Some states may ask about your settlement plans or funds, so check the nominating state's requirements.

13. Do I need an Australian PR consultant in Sri Lanka?

It is not mandatory, and you can apply yourself. If you use help, choose a registered migration agent with a valid MARN, because unregistered advisers can cause expensive mistakes.

14. What benefits do I get after Australian PR?

You can live, work and study anywhere in Australia (with some conditions on 190/491), access Medicare, and sponsor eligible family members. After meeting the residence requirements, usually 4 years including 1 year as a permanent resident, you can apply for citizenship. Sri Lanka also offers a dual citizenship scheme.

15. Will the 2027 points test reform affect my application?

If you are invited and lodge under the current rules, the current test applies to you. The new test is expected from 1 July 2027, so getting your assessment and English ready early gives you the most options.

Final Thoughts: Your Australia PR Journey Starts with the Right Plan

Australia PR for electronics engineers from Sri Lanka is very achievable, but it is not quick or automatic. Your success depends on three things. First, choose the right assessment pathway (Washington Accord or CDR). Second, push your points as high as possible, with English as the biggest lever. Third, apply for more than one visa option instead of waiting only for a 189 invitation.

Start with your Engineers Australia assessment and English test now. Those two steps take the longest, and nothing else can move until they are done.
