Italy Student Visa Rejection Rate

What Is the Rejection Rate for a Student Visa in Italy?

There is no official rejection rate for its long-stay (Type D) student visas. The widely shared EU visa statistics cover short-stay Schengen visas (tourist, business, family visits), not study visas.

That’s why you see such different numbers online. Some sources quote an older trend, saying the rate was 8.2 percent in 2017, rising to 9.6 percent in 2018 and 9.9 percent in 2019. A more recent consultancy estimate puts the rejection rate at roughly 10–15%, varying with the applicant’s nationality and the quality of their documents. So you can assume the typical refusal rate currently averages between 12% and 15%

Why Sri Lankan Applicants Should Be More Careful

Your nationality matters. While there’s no official Italy study visa data by country, short-stay Schengen data gives a useful signal. According to one analysis of 2024 data, Sri Lanka’s Schengen rejection rate was 24.5% across about 50,000 applications, which is well above the overall average.

Student visas are a different category, so this doesn’t mean 1 in 4 Sri Lankan students get refused. But it does mean consular officers in Colombo look closely at Sri Lankan files, especially financial documents. A well-prepared file still has excellent chances.

The Big 2026 Change: Higher Bank Balance Requirement

This is the single most important update for the 2026/27 intake. The minimum funds requirement rose from €6,947.33 to €10,179.85 per year, an increase of more than 46%.

Many Sri Lankan students budgeted using the old figure. If your agent or an older blog still quotes €6,947.33, that information is out of date. In Sri Lankan rupees, €10,179.85 works out to well over LKR 3.5 million depending on the day’s exchange rate, so check the current rate with your bank.

Two other new rules matter. The final visa deadline for bachelor’s and master’s programmes is 30 November 2026, though your university may set an earlier date. Also, under the new circular, a university can only validate its allocated international places plus a maximum of 20 percent, so applying late on Universitaly carries more risk than before.

What the Italian Embassy in Colombo Actually Asks For

The Embassy’s own study visa checklist (version updated July 2026) includes several Sri Lanka-specific requirements that generic guides miss.

Processing time can be up to 3 months. The Embassy states study visa processing may take up to three months and that applications cannot be expedited under any circumstances. Don’t wait until October.

Universitaly pre-enrollment is mandatory. The checklist requires proof of enrolment in Universitaly for Bachelor’s, Master’s, Single-Cycle Master’s and PhD courses.

Language proof at B2. For degree courses, you must prove knowledge of the course language at no lower than B2 level.

Detailed financial documents. Colombo asks for more than a bank statement. The list includes salary slips for the last 3 months, EPF and ETF statements, personal bank statements covering current, savings and fixed deposit accounts for the last 3 months, and certified valuations of movable and immovable assets.

Sponsor documents. If parents or relatives are paying, the sponsor must provide a letter explaining why they’re supporting you and your relationship, proof of employment or business, three months of bank statements, and certified asset valuations.

Foreign exchange letter. A step many Sri Lankans forget: a letter from your bank confirming foreign exchange will be released once the visa is granted, plus recent credit card statements.

Translations. Documents in Sinhala, Tamil or other languages need an official English translation certified by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dichiarazione di Valore (DOV) or CIMEA: Don’t Let This Delay You

The Embassy accepts either a Dichiarazione di Valore legalised by the Embassy’s consular office, or alternatively a CIMEA certificate. Which one you need depends on your university, so ask them first.

If you go the DOV route, plan for the sequence. You can only apply for a Declaration of Value after your educational documents have been legalised by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then the formal DOV request must be made in person or through a delegate at the Embassy’s consular office at 55 Jawatta Road, Colombo 5, after booking an appointment on prenotami.esteri.it.

These are three separate steps (MFA legalisation, DOV appointment, visa application), each with waiting time. Start at least 4–5 months before your intake.

Top Reasons Italy Student Visas Get Rejected for Sri Lankans

Based on the Embassy checklist and what applicants report, these are the most common refusal causes:

“Sudden” funds in your account. A bank balance that jumps right before the interview looks very different to an officer than steady savings built up over months. Avoid large unexplained deposits in the last few months.

Using the old €6,947.33 figure. Showing less than €10,179.85 for 2026/27 is an easy reason to refuse.

A rushed DOV. Applicants who leave the Dichiarazione di Valore to the last minute often see their whole visa timeline fall apart

Mismatched details. Your name, course, dates and accommodation should match exactly across your acceptance letter, Universitaly summary, bank papers and covering letter.

Insurance gaps. The Embassy requires overseas medical insurance for at least 30 days, with the expectation that you’ll join an insurance scheme after arriving in Italy.

A weak covering letter. The Embassy explicitly asks for a letter explaining your plans and purpose. A generic, copied letter hurts. Explain why this course, why Italy, and how it connects to your career in Sri Lanka.

How to Improve Your Chances: A Sri Lanka-Specific Timeline

Roughly 6 months before intake, shortlist universities, check whether they want a DOV or CIMEA, and start building savings that will look stable on statements.

About 5 months before, get your certificates legalised by the Sri Lankan MFA and book your DOV appointment (or apply for CIMEA).

About 4 months before, complete Universitaly pre-enrollment early, since the 20% cap means late applicants may miss validation.

About 3 months before, collect your full financial file, sponsor documents, bank forex letter, accommodation proof and insurance, then submit your visa application. Remember the 30 November 2026 final deadline.

What If Your Italy Student Visa Is Rejected?

You’ll get the refusal in writing with a reason. Read it carefully, as most refusals point to a specific fixable gap like funds, documents or credibility. Fix that exact issue before reapplying, rather than submitting the same file again. If time allows before the deadline, you can reapply; you can also appeal, though appeals take time and usually need a lawyer in Italy.

Frequently asked questions

There’s no official figure. Estimates range from about 85% to 90%, with some sites claiming 98%. A strong, consistent file is what puts you on the right side of those numbers.

Yes. It has relatively low tuition at public universities, regional scholarships, and a large Sri Lankan community. About 100,000 Sri Lankans live in Italy, the second-largest Sri Lankan community in Europe, which can make settling in easier.
