Australia PR for Mechanical Engineers from Sri Lanka (2026 Guide)
Yes. Mechanical Engineer (ANZSCO 233512) is an eligible occupation for Australian skilled visas. A Sri Lankan mechanical engineer needs a positive skills assessment from Engineers Australia, at least competent English, a minimum of 65 points and an invitation before turning 45. The main PR routes are the subclass 189, 190 and 491 visas.
Can a Mechanical Engineer from Sri Lanka Get PR in Australia?
Yes, a mechanical engineer from Sri Lanka can apply for Australian permanent residence (PR) through the skilled migration program. However, you must meet four basic rules first:
- Skills assessment: a positive result from Engineers Australia for Mechanical Engineer (233512)
- Age: under 45 when you are invited to apply
- English: at least competent English, which is IELTS 6 in each band or an equal score in another accepted test
- Points: at least 65 points on the Australian points test
Meeting these rules lets you enter the pool. It does not guarantee an invitation, because you compete with other applicants on points.
Which Australia PR Visa Is Best for Mechanical Engineers: 189, 190 or 491?
Mechanical engineers can use three points-tested visas. The right one depends on your points score.
| Visa | Type | Who nominates you | Extra points | Where you can live |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Subclass 189 | Permanent | No one; points only | 0 | Anywhere in Australia |
| Subclass 190 | Permanent | A state or territory government | 5 | The nominating state |
| Subclass 491 | Provisional, with a pathway to PR | A state or territory, or an eligible family member | 15 | Regional Australia |
In addition, there is an employer route. An Australian employer can sponsor you on a 482 visa, which can lead to PR through the 186 visa. This route depends on a job offer, not on points.
Engineers Australia Skill Assessment for Mechanical Engineers: Is Your Sri Lankan Degree Recognised?
Engineers Australia is the authority that assesses mechanical engineers for migration. Your pathway depends on your degree.
Washington Accord pathway
The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) joined the Washington Accord in June 2014. Therefore, if your four-year engineering degree is accredited by IESL and you graduated in or after 2014, you can usually apply through the Accord pathway. This pathway is simpler and cheaper.
CDR pathway
If your degree is not IESL-accredited, or you graduated before 2014, you apply through the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) pathway. In a CDR, you write about your own engineering work so the assessor can judge your skills. Check your programme on the IESL list before you choose a pathway.
Engineers Australia Skill Assessment Fees, Processing Time and Validity
Engineers Australia raised its fees on 1 July 2026. The current charges for the Accord pathway are:
- Qualification assessment only: AUD 505, or AUD 555.50 with GST
- Qualification plus skilled employment assessment: AUD 940, or AUD 1,034 with GST
CDR assessments cost more. A standard application generally takes about 15 weeks to be assigned to an assessor, and a paid fast-track option is available.
The outcome letter has no expiry date with Engineers Australia. However, the Department of Home Affairs applies its own time limits for visa purposes, so confirm the letter is still accepted before you lodge.
How Many Points Do Mechanical Engineers Need for Australia PR?
The legal minimum is 65 points. The main points are:
| Factor | Points |
|---|---|
| Age 25 to 32 | 30 |
| Age 18 to 24, or 33 to 39 | 25 |
| Age 40 to 44 | 15 |
| English: competent / proficient / superior | 0 / 10 / 20 |
| Overseas skilled work: 3 to 4 / 5 to 7 / 8+ years | 5 / 10 / 15 |
| Bachelor's degree | 15 |
| Single applicant | 10 |
| State nomination (190) / regional nomination (491) | 5 / 15 |
Example: a single 30-year-old engineer with a Bachelor's degree, IELTS 7 in each band and five years of experience scores 30 + 15 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 75 points. With a 190 nomination this becomes 80, and with a 491 nomination it becomes 90.
Is 65 Points Enough for a 189 Invitation as a Mechanical Engineer?
Usually not. 65 points only lets you submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). After that, the Department invites the highest-scoring people in each occupation.
In the 4 June 2026 round, minimum scores ranged from 65 to 100 points depending on the occupation. Engineering occupations generally needed more than the minimum. For this reason, check the latest round results on the Home Affairs website and aim for the highest score you can prove.
The fastest ways to add points are a higher English score and a state nomination. Our IELTS and PTE training can help with the first.
Do You Need a Job Offer to Get Australia PR as a Mechanical Engineer?
No, not for the 189 visa. It is based on points alone, and you can apply from Sri Lanka. The 190 and 491 visas need a state nomination, and each state sets its own rules. Some states ask for a job offer or work experience in that state, while others do not.
On the other hand, the employer route (482 and 186) always needs an Australian employer to sponsor you.
Can You Get a Mechanical Engineering Job in Australia Without Local Experience?
Yes, but it often takes time. PR gives you the right to work. It does not give you a job. Many new migrants say employers ask for Australian experience, and some take a lower role first.
Australia employs about 22,900 mechanical engineers, so the job market is real but competitive. To improve your chances:
- Rewrite your CV in the Australian style, with results and numbers
- Learn the Australian Standards used in your field
- Target industries that hire mechanical engineers, such as mining, manufacturing, building services and energy
- Consider regional areas, where competition can be lower
- Save enough money to cover several months of job search
